Head to head, Tweaky Tuned Subaru WRX 08 Vs SW2 Subaru WRX 08
First off, we head to Catalunya National, and I plump for the Tweaky Tuned Subaru, leaving Guru with the SW2 one. We both start mid grid against the AI, both of us get out in front of the AI, with Guru having an easier time and being a little way ahead. The Tweaky Tune is catching up fast though. At the end of the straight Guru brakes a bit earlier than I expect, and I give him a tap as I lock up all four wheels. He maintains control and pulls out a lead, which quickly gets eaten by the TT car. And that’s how it stayed, the SW2 car seemed to be a bit loose and caused Guru some problems in the turns, and on the straights the Tweaky car could also make a lot of ground. I got 1:18.845 lap.
All change, I get the SW2 car, and I try to follow Guru driving the Tweaky Tuned. It’s a tough ask, as the SW2 Subaru just doesn’t seem to have the handling or speed to do anything about it as Guru marches away over 6 laps, and I fight for control. The SW2 gets me a 1:19.308.
Guru: Me and Dougty were very sceptical after looking at the initial build costs for both cars. Was the Tweaky car really going to be worth that much more then the SW2 build. Well Catalunya opened my eyes to how different the build’s are as Dougty has said the sw2 car is hard to drive and the tweaky car just eased away.
My lap times where:
Tweaky tuned: 1.17.848 PB 495th
SW2: 1.18.730
We discuss the two cars and decide the SW2 tune may suit a shorter track, so Maple Short is chosen. I call dibs on the Tweaky car and the SW2 goes to Guru. The TT car is well balanced and pulls out a lead from a struggling Guru, apart from my mistakes we would have romped off fairly quickly. I score a 40.851.
Swap cars.
I take the SW2 car into the first turn, and soon find that it starts to break away at the rear mid turn, and needs correction. There is also some understeer going into the turns. Guru is leaving me in his dust. I managed a 41.359 this time. A short talk confirms that we both had some trouble with the rear of the SW2 car, and that the TT car is easier to drive.
Guru: Well a shorter track just bought out the weaknesses in the SW2 Build even more than Catalunya. In the Tweaky car we could both push it a lot harder and know the car would respond to the extra aggression. The lap times showed this with the tweaky car doing a lap of 40.869 (Pb) and the sw2 car just over half a second down with a lap of 41.582
Still holding onto the idea that the SW2 car is a short track tune we head to Road Atlanta Club. Immediately I am struggling in every turn as it doesn’t like the road surface. The uphill sweeping bend gives me the most trouble as the rear breaks away midway through leaving me drifting for the rest of the turn. Hitting a best lap of 1:01.091 wasn’t easy, and saw Guru romping further away each lap. We had an extra car there too in the shape of a FWD Golf which was also keeping pace with Guru and leaving me way behind.
Swap cars.
The Tweaky car just feels so much easier to drive again, and holds the corners and pulls uphill cleanly with grip to spare. I make some mistakes in a few laps, but get a 1:00.155 best lap for me. Watching Guru in the SW2 car though is a lot of fun, as somehow he makes a better job of holding it than I could. He calls that something skill, smartarse.
Guru: Here we are at one of my favourite tracks. I can’t hit amazingly fast laps here but I’m consistent. Round the long bend the SW2 car oversteered and I had to ease of whereas the Tweaky car just gripped and again set the best lap time.
Tweaky: 59.792
Sw2: 1.00.023
We decide to give the SW2 car a chance for redemption, and hit Iberian. I run the Tweaky car first, against Guru in the SW2 one. It seems the SW2 car has a home here, as Guru pulls out a lead. I’m pulling a 55.258 second lap and fairly consistent, but I can’t catch the SW2 car.
Trade cars for the final time, and the SW2 tune does feel heaps better on this track than the others, and for once feels better than the Tweaky car. We both catch and overtake the FWD Golf Gti and both have more speed in the straights than the VW, but the SW2 tune is working very well here. I score a 54.889 so it’s finally a point to the SW2 car.
Guru: One last chance saw the SW2 car finally give us something to smile about with Dougty getting a faster lap. However with me the Tweaky car still set a lap a lot faster. However the SW2 car felt a lot better here then on any other track it had been driven on. I found it a lot easier to be consistent with this car then I had the Tweaky one.
Tweaky: 54.391
SW2: 55.238
Overall:
The Tweaky tuned car is far more expensive in every aspect then the SW2 version. However, after this extensive shakedown of both cars we both agreed that it’s more then worth saving up the credits and shelling out on the tweaky tuned car.
The Tweaky car was far more stable and a lot easier to drive the laps it did then the SW2 car. As you can see the average gap between them is around 1second a lap now driving online that’s a big gap.
One comparison we made during this shakedown was the SW2 car is more Tesco value in the way it’s very cheap to build whereas the Tweaky car is more your Waitrose more expensive and better quality.
